Counseling really matters
If we have a cold or a headache or a skin rash, we do well to go to the dispensary or the pharmacy, describe the symptoms of our malady, expect to receive medicine in the form of pill or mixture or salve to restore us to comfort and vitality. We often wish we could do the same thing when we are discouraged, angry, anxious or depressed.
A medical diagnosis often tells us something about the cause of the trouble and points towards a remedy. A stomach ache must be from something we ate, a headache from eyestrain or nervousness. diagnosis of an emotional problem on the other hand dos little more than label the external presentation. we often can’t put our finger on just why we are in a bad mood or overcome with anxiety.
It is upto counselor to pull the other person up and over this present obstacle to well-being and success. he or she banks heavily on his or her own experiences, for after all ” the best surgeon is the one who has been under the knife many times “. the counselor is the guide rather than co-worker, the companion in the relationship.
the basic aim of the counselor is the to join the other and be with him or her as he grapples with difficulty, struggle up his or her hill. the counselor tries to see things the way the other does, without forcing his own views on him or her. counselor tries to experience the other person as he really is and as he presents himself or herself here and now by his or her words and gesture and behavior.
The counselor believes that once the person can accept himself or herself and come to grips with the situation, because the counselor accepts him and his or her world as real, then the counselor will have the confidence and strength to move in positive direction, out of anxiety, away from anger, up from depth of his or her depression with words ” I care about you “.
